Computer Course Curriculum

Registration for the Spring classes will be held in the Calendar House Perry Room on Monday, February 1 at 9:00 to 10:30 am. Doors open 8:30 am. Applications will be handed out on arrival on a first come, first served basis.
A formal late registration session will be held on Monday February 18 from 9:00 to 10:30 am for any remaining class places.
After 18th February, contact a member of staff for information on any remaining open places.
The Spring 2010 classes begin on Tuesday February 23rd and end on 27 April 2010

Computer Course Descriptions and Schedule

Computer Basics for Beginners.

This FREE four-week course for those with little or no computer experience is an opportunity to explore their interest in learning to use computers. Introduces the student to the components of a computer you need to know: the screen, mouse, keyboard, CPU and printer; and the elements and advantages of using a computer. This course is a pre-requisite for all others offered. Basic for Beginners is held on Tuesdays 9:00 to 11:00 am. Course will run twice: (1) Feb. 23, Mar. 2, 23, 30 and (2) Apr. 6, 13, 20, 27.

Introduction to Computers.

An 8-week course for students who've had Computer Basics for Beginners and are comfortable with the mouse and keyboard. Provides a foundation for more advanced courses by teaching the elements of using a computer: (1) creating and managing files and folders; (2) create, edit, cut, copy, paste and save documents using Word; (3) a brief cruise on the Internet; and (4) an introduction to e-mail. Tuesdays, 1:00 to 3:00 pm from Feb. 23 thru Apr. 13.

Exploring the Internet.

Become familiar with a browser, the software used to venture out on the World Wide Web. Learn various ways to navigate to web sites by entering new web site addresses and using links. Do a search for any information you desire. Learn to meet and communicate with others on the Internet; how to organize your favorite web sites; download information, new software and updates for your computer; and Internet Security and Personal Privacy. Thursdays, 1:00 to 3:00 pm. From Feb. 25 thru Apr. 1.

Using E-Mail Effectively.

Learn to use email efficiently and discover its often unknown features. Learn to create your own G-Mail account which is FREE and can be accessed from any connected computer anywhere. Learn to compose, send, receive, read, reply & forward email; open, save and forward attachments; set up and manage your email address book; block and filter unwanted (SPAM) email; set up labels for easy filing; search email and learn smart email habits and etiquette. Thursdays, 9:00 to 11:00 am from Feb. 25 thru Apr. 1.

The Many Faces of Google.

Google is the most popular search engine for finding information on the Web. Yet, most users do not know about Google's many hidden tools. This course will show you how to discover and use the power in Google.. Wednesdays, 9:00 to 11:00 am from Feb. 24 thru Apr. 14.

Computer Tune Up.

Over time, any computer will appear to run more slowly and needs a little routine TLC to restore its youthful vitality. This two-week workshop will show you how to revitalize your computer by removing superfluous files, updating the system security and putting things in the most efficient order. Tuesdays, 9:00 to 11:00 am, Mar. 9 and 16.

Managing Files & Folders.

A 3-week course in creating an efficient system for organizing files and documents into folders and sub-folders for easy retrieval. Use personal documents and info you find on line. Practice finding, creating, renaming, moving, copying, and deleting files and folders. Save info on computer hard drive and flash drives. Thursdays from 9:00 to 11:00 pm. Apr. 8, 15, and 21

Photoshop Elements 6.

Photoshop Elements: Bring out the best in your images! Adobe's Photoshop Elements provides the tools you need for quick fixes and detailed enhancement. Take control as you discover the features of this award-winning package specifically designed for photo enthusiasts including those with no image-editing experience, this class will take you from novice to accomplished user. Fridays February 26 to April 23.

Class Fees.
